Transparency International UK have welcomed today's announcement of new sanctions targeting corrupt actors undermining democratic governments.

Today's announcement is the latest in the Foreign Secretary’s campaign to tackle corruption and dirty money, aimed at protecting the UK public from organised criminals and safeguard our democracy.

Responding to the announcement Duncan Hames, Director of Policy and Programmes said:

"Independent journalists and organised civil society are the frontline defence against corrupt officials seeking impunity, so we welcome the Foreign Secretary's decisive action against those undermining democracy and the rule of law in eastern Europe.

"Attacks by the Georgian authorities against civil society and independent journalists are reprehensible, and we stand in solidarity with our colleagues in Transparency International Georgia during this difficult time.

"These sanctions are a clear sign of the UK Government's intent and should be part of a sustained campaign to protect democratic institutions from malign influence."
