Commenting on the new law, Steve Goodrich, Head of Research and Investigations, Transparency International UK said:

"The Hillsborough Law delivers crucial long-awaited reforms, including a new offence covering corruption in public office.

"Our investigation into suspected COVID-19 corruption exposed serious gaps in existing laws, with misconduct that fell outside traditional bribery or fraud charges that is yet to be challenged through the courts.

"These proposals represent a significant improvement over previous Law Commission recommendations, and we look forward to Parliament's detailed consideration of this important legislation."
