Response to Unaoil bribery convictions

14 July 2020 – Responding to the news that two former Unaoil executives have been found guilty of conspiring to give corrupt payments to secure contracts in Iraq, Sophie Ogilvy, Director of Transparency International UK’s Business Integrity Programme, said:

“We welcome these guilty verdicts which represent a positive step in the fight against global bribery and corruption. Iraq is a country with huge a wealth of natural resources and yet, as highlighted by this case, this can be exploited by a small number of corrupt individuals with the complicity of Western firms. The UK should remain an active enforcer of its bribery laws overseas to provide a level playing field for firms competing for contracts, and a credible deterrent against abuses of power for private gain.
