December 22, 2022 - Responding to the appointment of Sir Laurie Magnus as the new Independent Adviser on Ministerial Interests, Rose Whiffen, Senior Research Officer at Transparency International UK, said:

“This welcome appointment fills a gaping hole in executive oversight, but the role must be given real independence if the Prime Minister is to demonstrate a genuine commitment to accountability in government. Giving the Independent Adviser on Ministerial Interests the autonomy to initiate investigations and publish their findings - without the interference of the Prime Minister - would go a long way towards strengthening the role. These changes can and should be made now the post has been filled to restore much-needed credibility to standards in government.”
