Anti-Corruption Lecture 18

On 12th December the 2018 Transparency International UK Annual Lecture took place, with Bill Browder as the guest speaker. Bill Browder was the driving force behind the Magnitsky Act, US legislation that authorises the government to sanction human rights offenders, freeze their assets and ban them from entering the country. He continues to campaign for the introduction of similar legislation passed in Magnitsky’s name across the European Union and is the author of RED NOTICE, which chronicles corruption in Russia. Watch the speech in full here:

The Annual Lecture was held in the lecture theatre at law firm Clifford Chance, as it has been each year since the first one was held in 2009. In the run up to this year’s lecture allegations were made in Private Eye Magazine that Clifford Chance had represented clients who had amassed suspicious wealth. We engaged with Clifford Chance on this issue and Clifford Chance made the following statement at the lecture:

Clifford Chance Statement

During the Q&A following Bill Browder’s speech Richard Brooks from Private Eye asked a question based on the magazine’s story about Clifford Chance. Robert Barrington, our Executive Director, responded to this on behalf of Transparency International UK. The following is a clip of that section of the Q&A.

Guests at the lecture were invited to view an exhibition marking our 25th anniversary covering some of our successes and landmark moments over the past 25 years. You can view that exhibition here:
