Corruption overseas

Corruption and poverty

In many countries, ordinary citizens’ lives are made extremely difficult by corruption. For those in a developing country who cannot access health care, education or even food and water without paying bribes, corruption is a daily problem. It is well-known that corruption arrests economic development, and it often remains entrenched because a rich and corrupt elite has a strong self-interest in retaining power.

Transparency International UK (TI-UK) works to reduce the UK’s impact in fuelling corruption overseas, and to address the UK’s role in wider international efforts to combat corruption.

TI-UK advocates and produces research on the UK’s anti-money laundering efforts, including curbing illicit financial flows and international recovery of stolen assets.

Ensuring that companies based in the UK do not contribute to corruption in foreign countries through bribery, or other means, is also a priority. TI-UK led a successful campaign to secure a new UK Bribery Act, bringing the UK in line with its international obligations.

TI-UK also advocates better coordination among UK government departments to deliver an effective UK strategy for combating overseas corruption with effective leadership from the Government’s Anti-Corruption Champion.

Transparency International Global work

TI-UK is the UK chapter of Transparency International (TI). TI has national chapters in over 90 countries and an International Secretariat in Berlin, giving TI unparalleled global understanding and expertise.

The damaging effects of corruption are seen again and again by Transparency International (TI) colleagues who work at a grassroots level in over 50 countries to provide free and confidential legal advice to witnesses and victims of corruption, helping them to pursue their complaints. To date, TI has dealt with more than 100,000 individual cases.

The global TI movement has also produced cutting edge research on how corruption affects a wide range of global issues such as education and climate change governance, and uses the research to push for change.
