MPs propose new regulation on revolving door

Parliament’s Public Administration Select Committee (PASC) has today published its report on the rules which govern the movement of individuals between jobs in government and jobs in business.
The so called ‘revolving door' between the public and private sector can be of benefit to both sides but is open to abuse if not properly regulated. It can bring the risk that government officials will be influenced in their policy or procurement decisions by the interests of past or prospective employers.
PASC makes a number of recommendations, including the introduction of statutory ethics regulation and the abolition of ACoBA, the body which currently advises ministers and senior civil servants on post-government business appointments. PASC recommends that ACoBA be replaced by a new, statutory, Conflicts of Interest and Ethics Commissioner
Transparency International UK (TI-UK), which recommended statutory regulation of more robust rules last year, welcomes the PASC’s Report. The Government should accept the recommendations of the PASC and implement them swiftly before the occurrence of more scandals that further corrode public trust and confidence.
