Operations Intern – Defence and Security Programme

INTRODUCTION

The failure of many countries to provide security and justice for their people, or to forge stable and predictable relationships with their neighbours, is a root cause of some of some of the world’s most significant security challenges. TI Defence & Security (TI-DS) is working towards a world in which governments, the armed forces and arms transfers are transparent, accountable and free from corruption. We seek reforms toward open governments served by transparent defence institutions that are accountable to ordinary people and whose primary purpose is the protection of all citizens.

TI-DS works across three themes: with developed and emerging powers to create global standards for the governance of military power; on conflict and insecurity – to ensure policy makers recognise the threat corruption poses to peace and to reduce defence corruption in a fragile and conflict affected states; and tackling corruption in the global arms trade.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE ROLE

We are looking for a paid intern to contribute to work across the TI-DS team for six months. TI DS is growing and establishing a permanent presence, embedded in other TI chapters, in a number of global locations. At the same time our funding base is expanding and the team is initiating new projects across all three thematic areas.

The candidate will report to the Operations Manager and will be exposed to work across the programme’s three themes. They are likely to gain experience of a range of skills from supporting improvements in administrative and management practice, to conducting short term research tasks or advocacy planning in support of country or thematic projects.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to participate in ongoing organisational training alongside their colleagues, who receive professional development training in areas such as: communications, advocacy, networking and writing style. They will also benefit from working with a highly dynamic, motivated and diverse team who have a wide range of professional experience which includes diplomacy, civil society, law enforcement, the military and law.

This is an exciting opportunity to explore the work of a leading INGO and to gain experience of working in the governance, security or defence sector. You will not need previous NGO experience or specific skills, but will have a strong academic track record, be enthusiastic, willing to learn and keen to support the team with its priorities.

 

KEY DUTIES

The exact focus of the role will be highly dependent on the week-to-week requirements of the team. Fundamentally it will be a supporting role for the programme’s activities. You may be expected to pick up basic administrative tasks, such as helping to ensure effective information management one week, or assisting in the logistical arrangements for an international event the next. You will also be asked to assist with the collation and processing of data for monitoring and evaluation. However there will also be opportunities for the right candidate to contribute to the programme’s research into corruption and its role in the programmes thematic areas. Although a level of self-reliance and initiative will be expected, you will be guided and supported throughout by experienced staff from a friendly and experienced team.

 

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE

 

Essential

  • 2:1 degree or above in a relevant discipline, such as international relations or security studies;
  • Excellent people skills; including the ability to work effectively as part of a team;
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills;
  • Demonstrated attention to detail;
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines;
  • Ability to prioritise and effectively handle multiple tasks.

Desirable (but not essential)

  • Knowledge of, or an academic background in anti-corruption;
  • Language skills.

Person Specification:

  • A highly motivated individual who is willing to quickly assimilate new information and to manage their own workload and tasks within programme priorities and with minimum supervision;
  • Capable of demonstrating creativity in applying solutions
  • Able to work with a geographically dispersed team;
  • Highly organised;
  • A commitment to Transparency International’s core values: Transparency, Accountability, Integrity, Solidarity, Courage, Justice and Democracy;
  • No restrictions on right to work in the UK.

Task

The Director of TI-DS, Katherine Dixon, has asked you to draft a letter to the South Korean Minister of Defence. The purpose of the letter is to secure a meeting with the ministry to discuss the work of the Defence and Security Programme with the ultimate goal of expanding the programme’s work in South Korea. This letter should be presented as a formal final draft from the Director and should not exceed 500 words.
