Jeremy Pope – In Memoriam
TI-UK is deeply saddened by the passing of Jeremy Pope, a founding member of Transparency International.
Jeremy was the founding Managing Director of Transparency International from 1994 to 1998 and later Executive Director of Transparency International’s London Office. He created one of Transparency International’s first source books, which was used to identify and address corruption risks in government and society, and is now the basis for the National Integrity Systems assessment, a tool that in many ways defines Transparency International. “The passing of Jeremy Pope is a sombre moment for all of us at Transparency International. For many years Jeremy Pope played a key role in building the intellectual strength that backed up the consciousness-raising so vital to Transparency International. He was instrumental in creating many of the pillars that Transparency International stands upon today,” the Chair of Transparency International Huguette Labelle said. TI-UK Board Member, Laurence Cockcroft, also a founding member of TI, who worked closely with Jeremy over many years, said: “ Jeremy Pope will always be remembered by those who knew him in the early days of TI for his robust commitment to addressing corruption, especially as a subversion of human rights. His personal commitment was always linked to an agile mind which was able to encapsulate ideals in both a legal and action-oriented framework. It was particularly manifest in the energy which he applied to encouraging the formation of chapters of TI in Africa and in engaging with governments on the anti-corruption agenda. His sense of what was both desirable and achievable enabled him to win support across a wide spectrum of opinion”.
