From Russia With Cash

The “From Russia with Cash” landmark documentary by Channel 4 and Amos Productions highlights the need to prevent money laundering through the UK property market.

Following the release of the “Empowering the UK to recover corrupt assets” discussion paper, TI-UK looks into Unexplained Wealth Orders as a tool to stem the flow of corrupt money into the UK.

Secrecy, or more specifically the use of secret companies incorporated in offshore jurisdictions, undermines money laundering investigations and leaves the door open for corrupt wealth – stolen from around the world – to be invested in high-end UK property.

Is police corruption a problem in the UK? This debate has come to the fore again this week on the back of new evidence of police corruption and deception following the murder of Stephen Lawrence. The government has taken action by setting out plans for a new criminal offence of police corruption.

At a time when corruption is perceived to be on the increase in the UK, a misinformed de-regulatory initiative is looking at rolling back efforts to fight corruption by watering down the Bribery Act.

The Global Corruption Barometer, published yesterday by TI, indicates that there are deep problems with UK politics; problems of public mistrust, perceptions of state capture by powerful interests, and, above all, complacency.
