Catherine and Neill Stansbury, who lead TI(UK)’s initiative to prevent corruption in the infrastructure, construction and engineering (ICE) sector, have been jointly awarded the "Award of Excellence - The Top 25 Newsmakers of 2007" by the "Engineering News Record", the world's largest construction and engineering journal. It has a readership of 250,000 industry professionals worldwide. One of the Top 25 nominees will be selected for the Award of Excellence at a function in New York on 3 April 2008.

Catherine and Neill gave up major careers as international corporate lawyers to join TI to devote all their time, initially on an entirely voluntary basis, to preventing corruption in the ICE sector both in the UK and abroad. A number of practical initiatives and tools have emanated from their efforts since 2002. These include:

  • The establishment of the UK Anti-Corruption Forum for the ICE sector, which collectivelyrepresents over 1,000 companies and 3 00,000 industry professionals. All its members are committed to implementing the Anti-Corruption Action Statement they adopted jointly in 2005.
  • The Project Anti-Corruption System (PACS), which targets both bribery and fraud. It sets out a variety of anti-corruption standards and templates to assist project participants to implement these standards in major construction projects.
  • The Anti-Corruption Code for individuals in the construction and engineering industry which explains how individuals may incur criminal liability for corruption.
  • An Anti-Corruption Training Manual for use by individuals and companies. It helps users to achieve a better understanding of corruption and how to avoid it.
  • A series of other reports and business tools to assist in the prevention of corruption on construction projects.

“This award is a fitting tribute to the foresight, dedication and perseverance of Catherine and Neill Stansbury. Thanks to their efforts we are beginning to see positive changes. The highly successful UK Anti-Corruption Forum has achieved buy-in from the infrastructure, construction and engineering sector in ways which seemed inconceivable f ive years ago. The Stansburys have demonstrated that it is possible to work constructively and effectively with key private sector partners to find practical ways to prevent corruption”, said Laurence Cockcroft, Chairman of TI(UK).
